At a time when many of us feel helpless, divided from our neighbors by forces seemingly beyond our control, what is God asking us to do for our neighbors?
Our Hightstown community is no exception to the damaging effects of fear, hostility and injustice. Hightstown is home to a large immigrant community, and in 2010 Latinos made up over 30% of the population.
In response to these conditions I made a commitment to active participation in a solution that would help to protect those of my neighbors who are at risk, and I became involved in immigration advocacy.
I started by seeking out those in the community who were already involved in advocacy efforts and understood the local needs. I learned that there are currently many ongoing efforts that include classes in ESL, Citizenship, GED, Spanish language, and basic computer skills. All classes are free of charge.
What is needed? Your help and your time. It is surprisingly easy to get involved. There are no certification requirements, no tests or applications to fill out. Just show up. I teach ESL and I don’t speak any Spanish (although I am taking the free Spanish language course).
We need mentors, teachers, lawyers, computer geeks, Spanish speakers. The rewards are the knowledge that you are making a difference, and an antidote to helplessness. There’s much that is needed, and there is much that you can do.
